Students Hit Campaign Trail

UM-Farmington students barnstorm for local and state candidates as part of the college's practical politics course. Taught by popular political science professor Jim Melcher, the class is offered during the fall semester of election years and flings students directly into the fray of real world political strategizing and cold calling residents....

Alliance with a candidate's beliefs is how students select who they'll campaign for, said Chelsea Goulart, a student working on Green Independent Party candidate Pat LaMarche's campaign for governor.
"Dr. Melcher really stressed working for something you believe in," said Goulart, also from Cape Cod. "I didn't ever expect to find someone as liberal as I am in the world and then I found Pat. She's someone who I really believe in and who I think represents a really awesome opportunity for Maine."...
