Good for You, Pat!

October 15, 2006, Letter to the Campaign

Excerpt from the blog:

As a Brit married to a Mainer — last October — and someone therefore who is sadly unable to vote in November, I am nonetheless delighted to see a politician in Maine prepared to speak out publicly in support of universal healthcare!! I just had to write to you and say so!

Amongst other things, a civilised nation should validate itself by the way it supports and empowers those least able to look after themselves — namely, children, seniors and the poor.

The UK's National Health Service is at the centre of the British psyche in determining what makes us proud to be Brits. I'm sure that Mainers, proud of their state, their independent streak and also their inherent good-neighbourliness, will also be innately proud of a universal health care scheme. It is great to see you and the Green Party in Maine leading the way.

Amongst other things, a civilised nation should validate itself by the way it supports and empowers those least able to look after themselves — namely, children, seniors and the poor. What better way to do that than by ensuring their access to the health services, medication and care they need, when they need it regardless of whether they have the cash to pay for it! I weep to see the expense to which seniors are put in meeting their health problems — shouldn't it get easier as one gets older not worse?

Good luck in November!
